Today Vincenzo and Rosa offered to take us out on a drive again.
This time they said
that we would head up into the mountains near Rovereto and check out some
dinosaur tracks. The drive up into the mountains was gorgeous.
And along the roadway to the dinosaur tracks were these memorials along
the side of the road. These are for WWI and WWII. We stopped
to look at one before heading up the mountain.
The walk up the mountain to see the dinosaur tracks was long.
And in some cases it was fairly steep going. Stephen was the only
one wearing his hiking boots. Kristie and I had a hard time getting
up the slopes every so often. The ground here is extremely
rocky. It is the rockiest mountain that I have seen in this region.
Most of the mountains are covered with pine trees. This one is bare
with only small shrub growth. Lot's of shale like rocks that break
and slip out from underneath your feet. At the top of this mountain
there are some platforms from where you can view the dinosaur tracks.
This sign on the platform shows the tracks locations and which dinosaur
made them. The tracks themselves are directly below and too the side
of the platform. They were rather dissapointing. You can see
that indeed something made tracks here, and it turned into stone.
There were even more tracks further up the side of the mountain but at
this point the ground was very unstable and we decided to give up the hike
to see them. Rosa did not even make it up to the first platform,
preferring instead to stay back on the main path. We finally joined
up with her and started the walk back down to the car. It seemed
like the walk down took longer than the walk up.
We then drove into Trento and I picked up some pizzas for the kids on the way home. We got home, ate dinner and crashed.
