Today started out pretty much like any other day this past week. We woke up, earlier today, to eat breakfast for the last time at the Albergo Accademia. Then we went back up to the room and everyone took a shower. I wanted to be sure that we got our showers in before moving to the hot-water-less apartment. We finished packing up our stuff and checked out of the hotel around 09h50. We took a taxi out to our apartment and started to unpack all our stuff into the closets and dressers.
Nothing is open on Sundays. So we packed up the soccer ball and
a frisbee and started out looking for a park to play in. We came
across a bocciofilio area where these folks even set up a building just
to play the game. Although the version they were playing was different
than what I've seen before. This one has two balls, one red and one
white, at the far end of the field.
The
players toss metal balls at these two balls. But what exactly is
the objective I'm not sure because no one hit one of the balls at the far
end, neither were they trying to get close to them. And a man at
the far end was collecting the metal balls as they were thrown. Needless
to say the kids were not very interested in this. They wanted to
play something themselves. The soccer field next to this bocciofilio
sight was being used by some people playing a game. So we decided
to walk further down the road. As we walked down the street who else
should drive by except for Vincenzo and his wife. They offered to
drive us to another park just down the road. They also invited us
to go to the mountains with them. I thought Vincenzo meant at 4 in
the morning, but he really meant 4 in the afternoon. Well, we'll
get to that later.
The kids and I played in the park and soon they had to go to the toilet
so we made our way home. From there we headed out again to the nearby
park
There we tossed the frisbee around for a while and then headed back home.
Fortunately we did head home because Vincenzo and his wife showed up around
4pm to go to the mountains! Talk about a surprise! We headed
out in the car and headed north. How far north I wasn't aware of
until we actually got there.
What you see in the background are the famed Dolomites! Needless
to say, we were not dressed for the weather. So next time we will
be packing up some clothing. Before we got to the Dolomites we stopped
off in a small town and wandered around the park there. Then we started
heading back to the city. We stopped off at this very picturesque
spot on the highway
that gives you a great view of the valley below the mountains. Up
in the north, nestled in-between the two mountains, you can see the
city of Bolzano. There are nothing but grape fields and apple orchards
in the valley below. They call this 'strada de la vino' for almost
all of the wine is produced in this region. The drive along the mountain
roads was really something else to see. We drove through a number
of what will be ski towns in only a few months. There are also some
parts of the Alps where you can still go skiing at in August!
We got home shortly before the kids bed time but they had yet to eat dinner. We scarfed down the salami and cheese we had bought the previous day. I sure will be glad when we get some gas in this apartment to be able to cook. That and the hot water should be on in the next day or two.
All in all it was a good day and it was kind of Vincenzo and his wife to invite us along up into the mountains. Without a car it would have been very difficult to have seen what we did today.
Tomorrow I start working and the kids start their baby-sitting days. I need to start planning out some trips out to Venezia and the surrounding cities here while the kids are here.
