Getting around

Morocco purportedly has the best train system in Africa. It does seem to run reasonably well. They are generally on time and really inexpensive. A one way overnight ticket from Tangiers is the equivalent of about $22 for first class. Also, this is one train system that travelling first class is probably worth it since the price differential is negligible. The train cars contain compartments that will seat up to six people. This is nice since you can manage some privacy from the other passengers.

The toilets on the trains are not so pretty. Generally in poor condition and lacking toilet seats. Generally lacking in any paper products also. Bringing your own roll of toilet paper is recommended. The toilets in the train stations are turkish style (big hole in the ground with a water hose, no paper products).

The doors on the train cars through which you enter may not latch securely so leaning against the door is not recommended. Some doors refuse to latch at all.

Always keep the curtain of the window to your compartment open. This way when the train is in the station the police can see into your compartment. Highly recommended in Tangiers where scam artists are on the trains trying to hustle you out of money.
