Alexandre Polozoff - Marakeesh

Now here is a city that is worth going to in Morocco. It still has a lot of old world feel to it with a modern slant. Very pretty and generally nice people. One event that is neat is hearing the call to prayer from the minarets which are scattered through out the city. You can get around Marakeesh pretty easily by either taxi or bus. From the train station take the #23 or #8 bus into town which drops you off near the Club Med. A short walk from there is the Hotel Isane which is reasonably priced with an attentive staff. The son of the owner even attended UT in Austin, Texas. From this point most of the old medina is within walking distance. At night the medina is lit with torches.

In the medina you can see things like snake charmers, tumbling acts, etc. Be forewarned, if you take a picture a man holding a pan will demand a tip. About 10d seems to be acceptable.

The beautiful women of Marakeesh have a tendency to stare western men straight in the eyes as they pass on the street. While a bit unnerving at first it seems to be acceptable, even required, to look straight back at them. Glance over your shoulder after your paths cross and you'll find they are looking back at you too. A nice change from the western world where most women don't even acknowledge your existence.

For those of you allergic to horses, don't forget your medication when visiting this town. Burros are still a source of transportation for some. There are horse drawn carriages you can take for an hour long tour. You can probably see just as much on foot.
